Your First Family Holiday as a Parent
Parenting is a world of firsts. Once you’ve had a baby, you get to experience everything else all over again, but with a completely different perspective. This includes family holidays.
There is an enormous difference between a holiday with other adults or even another family and going on a family holiday with your own child.
This is especially true if you’re traveling with young children. Don’t worry, you can have a great time when you’re on holiday with your baby or toddler, but it definitely helps to be prepared. This way, you can build memories and experiences for everyone to cherish.
In the Airport
While you don’t have to take the train for your first holiday and, in all honesty, it’s probably worth going for a short break to somewhere more nearby for your actual first trip, this is probably one of the most stressful parts of the whole holiday for most people. Unfortunately, the airport is even more stressful if you have young children.
First, do everything you can to get there well in advance, as this helps you deal with any unexpected delays. While the early morning flight is cheaper, it might not be possible to get your grumpy toddler to cooperate when you need them to.
It’s also best to be prepared for the airport. Use a travel pram that’s easy to get around, and talk to an airport attendant about any concerns you may have.
Packing Your Bags
Everyone has turned up on holiday only to discover that they’ve forgotten something they need. This is common, but it can be so stressful when what you’ve forgotten is something like diapers or bottles.
So, pack your bags the day before you leave. Make sure you have all of your paperwork sorted out and ready to go so that you don’t make an even worse discovery in the airport. This includes passports, travel insurance, and any VISAs that you might need.
Put things like sunscreen, and other toiletries in checked luggage along with your clothes. While it’s also worth packing any formula, you should take a supply with you. You can take formula onto a plane so you can still keep your baby fed and happy.
Planning Your Trip
It’s also a good idea to plan your trip in advance. Think about what activities are good for your whole family, including the adults and the young children. It’s also important to relax while you’re on holiday.
Some parents try to cram everything into one week and, while this can work, it can also lead to exhausted parents and grumpy children. A holiday is supposed to be refreshing and enjoyable.
So, find a beach nearby. Maybe visit a museum. Go for walks and enjoy your accommodation. Whether you’re staying in a hotel, a cottage, or a villa, make sure that you can factor in everyone’s needs on this holiday.
If your children are happy, you’ll be happier as well.
Go well,
Abi
