Why You Need a Clutter Cleanse Before Moving Day

If you’re considering moving, then I totally get it if the thought of your shiny new home is much more captivating than the moving process itself. Packing and shifting everything is blooming hard work and there are a lot of things that can feel like they're sapping your energy levels: scheduling, shifting things, budgeting, childcare - all sorts really!

One of the more surprising factors that can really start to get in the way, however, is clutter. Let’s take a hot minute to figure out why it's so frustrating and what you can do about it.

Clutter Steals Space!

It's true that a lot of what you might initially want to bring with you may be stuff that you don’t even need once you really think about it. I know it can feel like a bind, but I think that starting to pack early on, and making some pretty harsh decisions, can take a lot of pressure off as the moving date looms closer. It's wise to set any consumables or temporary items aside. For example, you might want to bring some toiletries and kitchen supplies in a box, to get you through those first few days after moving. However, for the rest of it, you can find ways to donate it, sell it for a little extra cash, or dispose of it as responsibly as possible. If you get stuck, try visualising where everything will go in your new home, and you'll soon see that not everything has a place, and maybe you could do without it.

Clutter Adds More Time!

Preparing for a move can be ultra time-consuming. Packing alone can take days and if there's additional clutter to wrap and pack, it'll add to the stress load as well as the time frame. Also, there are likely to be items that are too big or don’t have a place in your new home, but you absolutely know you don’t quite want to get rid of them. Having moved house so many times myself, I totally get this. So, you could look at storage unit options that can host these precious things temporarily. This way, you can pick them up in the future when you know what you want to do with them and keep them out of the way of the move. It's such a helpful option!

It's a sad fact that if you’re bringing absolutely everything that you have with you, then you had better be ready to pay more for the moving services you hire. They’re likely to need more space and perhaps a larger vehicle to meet your needs, which means forking out even more cash during a very expensive time. There are lots of ways that you can think about saving on the moving process, from sourcing your own packing materials to even doing a little of the moving and shifting yourself. I'll never forget the fifty million trips we did from our old house to our new house in my husband's tiny work van during our last house move (thankfully it was just down the road!).

If you want to move well, then it makes sense to move light, with as little clutter as possible. I'd say the golden rules are: get rid of what you can; find storage for the rest; and make sure that you have enough space for what you’re bringing with you. Moving doesn't have to be a nightmare - it can be the perfect opportunity for a clutter-cleanse!

Go well,

Abi
